Best Type of Grass Seed to Use

Q&A

What is the best kind of grass seed to use?

It depends on what conditions you are seeding into. If you get mostly sun in that area (more than 4 hours) you should use a sunny mix (containing Kentucky Bluegrasses, Perennial Rye and Fine Bladed Fescues). If you have less than 4 hours of sun you must use a shade tolerant mix that is high in Fine Bladed Fescues and no Kentucky Bluegrasses. Consult your garden center for the mix right for you. Keep in mind that Greenview offers a complete line of grass seeds. You can use our handy store locator to find Greenview products nearest you.

Brian,

Given your difficulty growing grass, I would suggest that you perform a soil test, and in particular check the pH of the soil. You may find a soil ammendment may be needed to grow thick and healthy grass. Contact your local extension agency for more information.

I live in Williamsburg Va. and have very sandy soil, I currently have tall fescue very sparse due to the amount of weeds I have which I cannot seem to get rid of. My yard is an all sun no shade area and I am about to pull my hair out getting anything but weeds to grow. What is the best grass combo for my area, soil type?

I live on the east coast, near the ocean. I have shaded sandy soil and am trying to grow grass and have it stay in the ground and look nice and green all year. What seed and fertilizer/watering do you suggest. Thank you very much in advance for your help. :)

Good Day Todd,
The cooler temperatures and adequate soil moisture that come with fall make September and early October the best months to renovate an existing lawn and establish a new lawn.

If you want additional tips in preparing the lawn for seeding, check out the September 2005 archive for the September 11th posting on this topic.

Thank you for your question.

Is Fall the best time to start growing a new lawn?

Hello Joel,
That is a very good question, especially with the combination of the sandy soil and sunny location. We would recommend any of our Greenview Fairway Formula grass seeds that are labeled sunny and that contain drought tolerant varieties of mainly tall fescue and some Kentucky blue (ie: Sunny Mixture or TTTF Sun/Shade). You will find more detail about the varieties at www.greenviewfertilizer.com, go to the Products tab along the right side.

If you are seeding, we also recommend that you use a starter fertilizer. Given your sandy soil, you will need a slow release nitrogen fertilizer so the nutrients don't wash immediately away with the first watering/rain fall. We suggest Greenview Fairway Formula Spring 26-4-12 Fertilizer. The patented slow release technology in the Greenview Fairway Formula Fertilizers will be released slowly over time and will not move straight through the sandy soil like other brands of fertilizer.

After seeding you will need to keep after your new turf by encouraging deep roots. This is done by correct irrigation to thoroughly wet the rootzone by watering frequently but in smaller amounts than on heavier soils. We also suggest mowing at a minimum height of 2.5", and preferably 3" - 3.5".

Enjoy your spring and let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,
Jo at Greenview Customer Service
