Greenview Diary: Spreading Fertilizer

In yesterday's post, I talked my sister into letting me set up the Greenview "right fertilizer, right time" program for her to use in fertilizing my mom's lawn. (I'd do it myself, but I live 1,000 miles away!)

Then I asked sis how she planned to put the fertilizer down. She said she would use a hand held spreader. I asked her why she didn't consider using a drop spreader to push-its easier...she said the banks are too steep for that, and said that with a sting! I cringed because I remember always kidding her that the banks were a way to sweat and get some exercise. (Not her two favorite topics!)

I suggested she use the hand held spreader on the banks and steep inclines because how much you lay down is very important. (You dont want to over fertilizer in some areas and under in others.) Sis said that made sense, but that she didn't have a drop spreader. Then mom interjected..."Your dad had one in the garage and used it when he was alive." Mom went on to describe right where it was. Funny thing is, I also remembered exactly where it was.

I asked my sister if she knew what kind of spreader it is and what setting she would use. Well, mom interjected and said "your dad just put it in and went around the yard."

I chuckled because mom always pulled weeds and edged while dad did the yard. In my kindest, gentlest, affectionate brotherly voice, I informed my mom and sister that there were settings on spreaders and that each setting depends upon the type of spreader and the fertilizer used.  They both went "ohhh."

I asked sis to go down and get the spreader model. She interjected, "I will just wait for you to come home and get the setting." I replied, "From Texas?" She said, "Yes,you are coming home this spring, right?" (As if i didnt know what she really was implying.)
