Something Digging Holes All Over Lawn

QUESTION/COMMENT:   I live in southeastern Mass. Something is digging holes all over my lawn. Could I have grubs? If so, what can I do about this? Thank you!

ANSWER:  You could have skunks digging holes in your yard looking for grubs to eat. To verify, lift up the turf in a small area (approximately 6"X6") of your lawn to visually look for grubs - if you see them physically moving around, the following treatment is recommended:

  • Prepare the area to be treated by dethatching (so the product can get down in the soil).  You might also want to mow (if necessary), etc. before applying Dylox to keep the treated area undisturbed for a while.

  • Apply Dylox to a dry lawn when the grubs are physically active (you want to get them right before they damage turf; usually in April, but may vary) for a fast, instant kill to last years grubs that have hatched.  Be sure to water immediately and thoroughly after applying this product.  Results are usually within 48 hours.

  • If you do not have grubs physically moving around, please contact your local county extension agency for their advice/recommendations on the holes all over your yard.

They could be skunks or ground moles

My mother-in-law lives in Amite, LA and has these pretty large mounds in her yard. They are about 6" around and have about a 2" hole on top that burrows deep into the ground. They are ALL OVER the lawn. Any help would be appreciated.

Lanny,

Call your local county extension agency, they will most likely be able to tell you what the holes are from and how to prevent them.

I live in central Mass. I have noticed small holes in my lawn and around the foundation of my home. These holes are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, and there is no mound around them. Any ideas of what is causing these holes. There are many holes not just one or two. I poured ant and carpenter ant treatment on them just in case. Thanks
